First Solo Trip - Saint Lucia

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!

You know what they say, underneath our fears lies great opportunities. Facing what scares us is often where personal growth and amazing experiences are born. This year, I did just that!

Anyone who knows me, knows traveling plays a significant role in my life. It’s been a magnetic pull to discover the world, connect with nature, and the beautiful cultures and people the world has to offer. Traveling has shaped the person I am today. A piece of every country is an essential part of who I am.

Traveling solo has always been on my bucket list, but nothing I was ever in a rush to cross off. I always preferred traveling with loved ones, especially my kids! I genuinely love traveling with them.

The intention for 2025 was a girl’s trip. One that was postponed several times over the last few years. March 2025, we said! For over a year, I looked forward to booking this trip, but life had other plans.

Although I felt disappointed to learn this trip wasn’t going to manifest, I couldn’t waste energy being upset about something completely out of my control, why not go alone!?

I pulled the trigger, booked a cheap flight, and found myself scared shitless! “What have I done!? Am I really doing this? OMG I’m doing this!!!” As it turns out, this was one of the GREATEST experience, one that’s left me thirsty for more.

I’ll be honest, I felt anxious but excited, all at the same time. “Will I get lonely? Bored? Will I be safe?” I had to push myself outside my comfort zone a bit, put some controls/rules in place to assure my safety, put my big girl pants on, and convince myself it would be worth it. And I’m so glad I did!

This trip meant something, its hard to put into words. It was difficult to book, difficult to leave the kids behind, but at the same time, an exciting adventure my soul yearned for. One that elevated me on many levels.

Its funny how things work out. The plan was always to travel with my friend, but the universe had something magical in store for me instead. The gift of exploration!

As soon as I landed in St. Lucia, I was greeted with open arms. A taxi driver named Winnie was waiting for me with a sign that read “Gen”. He put my bags in the back, complimented my beauty (how sweet), hit the road, and shared the beauty of his homeland along the way.

Booking a taxi from the airport was a great decision. Not only did I get to enjoy the scenery without worry, but we stopped for some freshly baked bread, delicious salt fish, and stopped to enjoy one of the most incredible lookouts. Breathtaking, isn’t it? I exhaled and took it all in!

About a 1.5-hour drive through beautiful green scenery and mountain views, I arrived in Castries to my car rental location. I rented a cute 4x4 Jimmy from a “friend of a friend” who owns a dealership. I quickly adapted to driving on the left, how exciting! Renting a car was a great decision. It gave me full flexibility over my time without restrictions or worries.

About a 30-min drive to Gros Islet (North of the island) I finally arrived at my beautiful villa found in Cap Estate. The “Beverly Hills” of St. Lucia (so I’m told). My home for the next week.

The villa is located on the grounds of a beautiful home owned by amazing hosts (I adored them). I quickly felt right at home. Secured gates, three of the sweetest rescue dogs, amazing gardens, modern decor, fresh flowers, serene, quiet, and welcoming environment. I couldn’t ask for more.

The hosts had coffee, tea, cold water bottles and some of the islands famous Piton beer waiting for me in the fridge (although I don’t drink alcohol, it was noticed and appreciated), not to mention a freshly picked papaya from their garden, perfect for breakfast!

The first hour was spent unpacking, taking a quick shower, then hit the road to find the closest grocery store. After a quick stop to get snacks and breakfast ingredients, I found myself driving at dusk with the windows down, Caribbean Soca playing on the radio, absolute freedom! Finally in bed with a book in hand I wondered… “where do I go first?!”.

I CAN’T BELIEVE I’M HERE!

While having breakfast on the terrace, I admired the breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, I felt an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. Proud for taking a leap of faith and carving out this time for myself.

One thing I genuinely enjoyed about my trip was the ability to sit in peace and quiet. “Just be” in complete silence. Which is hard to do when traveling with others. This time allowed me to sit with myself and enjoy the quiet sounds of nature. Birds chirping, the perfect breeze, heat of the sun on my skin, grounded and present in the most beautiful oasis in front of me. It finally sinks in….. I’m here!

BEAUTIFUL BEACHES OF ST. LUCIA!

Hands down, Saint Lucia is one of the finer vacation destinations in the Caribbean. With plenty of sun, sea, sand, lush greenery, peace, and as much excitement as you can fit into your itinerary. The unbeaten shores of the island were pure magic.

The luxury of having a car is the flexibility it brings. I could go anywhere, anytime. I dedicated one day to explore nearby beaches. What I loved about Cap Estate is that both the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans are a 5-min drive to either side of the island.

While beach hopping, I visited Cas en Bas, Rodney Bay, Smugglers Cove, Pigeon Island, ending my day at the Thirsty Parrot, a cute restaurant located on Pigeon Island public beach. Great service, delicious curry fish (chef recommendation), and beautiful sunset views.

I met a fellow Canadian at the airport who was disappointed in the beaches. She said there was lots of seaweed at her resort, she didn’t swim during her stay, nor did she leave the resort grounds. What a shame! Saint Lucia has some of the most beautiful beaches, clear water, and silky sand. There are a few beaches on my bucket list I didn’t get to visit this time around. But that’s ok! Just another reason why I have to go back.

CLIMBING THE GROS PITON!

Anyone who looks up Saint Lucia will read about the famous Pitons (Petit Piton & Gros Piton). Volcanic plugs (dormant) found on the southwestern coast of Saint Lucia. Not only are the Pitons a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but they have become a symbol of the island. A majestic and carefully composed natural monument.

Located a 2hr drive from my villa, I made sure to get up early for the trip across the island. What an adventure that was! This was my first time driving their mountain roads and it was next level! Definitely not for beginners or nervous drivers. Sometimes I wondered if the car would make it up such a steep hill, or if I’d be able to clear such a sharp turn.

After the first crazy mountain turns, I found my legs shaking and nervousness rushing through my body. I decided to pull over on a quiet shoulder to take a few deep breaths. After a few minutes of breathwork, I hit the road! From that moment on, I had absolutely no anxiety driving in the mountains. In fact, I enjoyed it!

There were so many breathtaking views on route. It was a vibe flowing through the beautiful curves of Mother Nature. Next time I must bring my GoPro.

When I arrived at the Pitons, I quickly put my running shoes on and off to start the 2,618.9 ft climb! I didn’t know what to expect really, but it was harder than expected. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the top, my knee did not collaborate. After 1.5 hours of climbing, I decided to turn back and start my decline. You know what that means? I must go back to finish the climb! Next time I will go prepared, now that I know what to expect.

The last picture seen below is from the first look-out point up the mountain. “Come sit with me in the shade beautiful”, behind me was a local man with dreads to his waist, smoking a blunt, selling coconut water to all the tourists making their way up the mountain. An invitation I could not refuse. I sat down with him for a good chat, refreshing cold water, and enjoyed his office view! Absolutely spectacular!

THE RICH HISTORY OF PIGEON ISLAND!

Next adventure was Pigeon Island. The energy on this island is magical, hard to put into words. As I learned about its history, I could feel the energy of the Freedom Fighters from 1792. As though we were both present, just in two different timelines. I sat with that for a while, connecting and reflecting. How many people worldwide are still fighting for their rights and freedoms today, 233 years later? I wondered, what would the Freedom Fighters tell us today?

I spent the entire day on the island. I made sure to enjoy every square inch. Every step taken with appreciation and gratitude for the land. The ruins, the majestic trees, the small wildlife hiding in the background, peaking with curiosity, and the 360-degree views! All for just $10US.

There are two peeks on Pigeon Island, Fort Rodney and Signal Peak. Both a much easier climb than the Gros Piton, and the views are just as breathtaking.

After climbing Fort Rodney, I headed back down to start my climb of the second point, Signal Peek (330’). While ascending, just a few steps away from the peek, I got caught in the rain! “Do I hurry back down? How long will this last? Will it get worse? I’m alone on a mountain, is this even safe?” Before my mind could hijacked this moment, I found a tree to use as a shelter and decided to simply enjoy mother earth’s shower. I stood there laughing out loud with myself, it was awesome! So many of us run from the rain, desperate to stay dry. Yet here I was, alone on a mountain in St. Lucia, laughing and enjoying every drop of rain felt on my skin.

The rain didn’t last, and my worst fears never manifested. Instead, I finished the climb and was rewarded with the most beautiful view. Clear blue skies, hot sun, cool breeze, and Martinique could be seen about 20 miles north on the horizon. A moment I will remember forever! I sat there for well over an hour taking it all in. Appreciating the quietness and pure peace I felt all around me, I prayed, I gave thanks, then sat still meditating with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude rushing through my body. I wish the kids could see this!

I had to convince myself to start my journey back down to explore the other side of the island. But every time I tried, I would convince myself to stay just a little while longer. Because of the rain, no one climbed up. I had the entire mountain and views to myself. And to think I contemplated turning around.

THE GIFT OF SPONTANEITY

Once down, I headed towards the private beaches found inside the park. As I walked the shore, I met an amazing soul named Maliki who had a small souvenir shop by the shore. My spiritual brother indeed. We ended up talking 3-hours about life, darkness and light, the spiritual war we are facing today, and the power of God. Instantly drawn to each other, I actively listened to him share his journey, and the darkness he faced. Maliki made an impression and carved himself a little place in my heart.

The beauty of traveling alone is the space it gives you to be spontaneous. Although I’m sure I would have spoken to Maliki, I never would have spent 3-hours of my day talking to him if I was with friends.

SO MUCH TO DISCOVER!

You haven’t experienced St. Lucia without going to their famous Friday Night Street Party. People from around the world gather to dance and enjoy tasty food found at every street corner. Every Friday night for the last 50+ years, the streets close down, BBQs start grilling, music is playing, and people party!

After plans of going with an old friend fell through, I decided to chat with my hosts about my concerns of going alone. I was originally advised not to drive there myself, nor to attend alone. Only an 8-minute drive away, my hosts assured me driving wasn’t a problem, you just needed to know where to park! They went over and beyond to ensure I safely enjoyed the street party and didn’t miss out!

My host lead the way, showed me exactly where to park, specified which street to walk and which to avoid, and introduced me to many of his local friends who were scattered at different bars. I was set!

I found myself gravitating towards a bar called Irie. The vibe was just right, jamming to Bob Marley and the Wailers. I met so many good people that night, I even had a marriage proposal lol. A night to remember!

On my last day, I booked an excursion on a catamaran boat cruise.

From Rodney Bay Marina, we traveled 2-hours around the island back to the Pitons. I wanted to visit a waterfall and famous mud baths, but didn’t want to drive another 2-hours there and back. Honestly, I wish I had. Next time I will drive or hire a boat taxi to bring me. Although I had fun, and made a few new friends, this was not the highlight of my trip. Too touristic for me. Too many visitors visited the sites simultaneously, which made it hard to fully appreciate the scenery.

The most memorable thing for me was the epic views of the land from out at sea, and the delicious meal shared amongst new friends.

ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END

The last three nights I found myself at my favorite spot for dinner! Marjorie’s Beachfront Restaurant & Grill, found on Cas En Bas beach, only a 5-minute drive from my villa. I had the entire place and beach to myself. I LOVED this place.

I found myself making friends with Marjorie’s son Vic, who was visiting from Germany to run the family-owned restaurant for a while. He grew up in the area and shared a piece of his home with me through his stories.

After dinner I would sit on the beach until nightfall. No book, no music, no distractions. Just me and the ocean.

I did a lot of reflecting on these nights, what brought me there, the fears and heartbreak that almost kept me from going, and how far I’ve come. I felt at home, like I was meant to be there.

The remarkable thing about traveling solo, is the space it gives you to truly connect with yourself, if you allow yourself to. Being present without distractions. A gift from the universe I’m glad I was open to receive.

THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS IS FREEDOM...THE SECRET TO FREEDOM IS COURAGE.
— Thucydides

“You’re so courageous!" is the most common response I’ve received when telling others about my trip. “I could never do that” is another.

I guess I am courageous. I’ve overcome many fears and limiting beliefs in the last few years. I’m grateful to have found the strength to do the things that felt uncomfortable, while believing in my faith, instincts and wisdom. Allowing beautiful moments that shape my soul become a reality.

Travelling solo does take courage. And what an experience it was! One I will always cherish, and something I am now open and ready to do all over again. This time without hesitations. One I wish for everyone to experience.

UNTIL NEXT TIME!

St. Lucia, and the people I met along the way, have a special place in my heart. I see myself owning a property there, surrounded by the healing energies of the land, seas, and the community of people I met.

While I am physically back home, my mind and spirit are still on the island. I left a piece of myself there. My mind often drifts to those moments on the beach, frozen in time. I can almost feel the wind in my hair, and the fresh sea air in my lungs. I often return to that moment, absolute peace rushes through my body. That my friend, is the power of being present.

I can’t wait to go back. In fact, I invite you to join me! I’ll be hosting a group experience on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia in the spring of 2026! Pitons, beaches, pigeon island, street party and so much more. Who’s coming!? Contact me to receive more information.

I had two objectives when I booked this trip: 1) reconnect with Mother Nature, and 2) strengthen my connection with God. I’m proud to say, I did just that!

Until the next travel adventure!
